Special Orthodontic Symposium with WFO President Dr. Roberto Justus

Auspiciously the First Seminar of the APO 2015-17 term  at the Marco Polo Hotel, Ortigas February 23, 2015 was honored by the presence of the World Federation of Orthodontists in the person of  WFO President Roberto Justus himself to personally extend an invitation to APO members to the upcoming 8th International Orthodontic Congress September 27-30, 2015 in London, United Kingdom, get updates about the APO/PBO,  and to share and deliver a 4 topic series of lectures in this Special Orthodontic Symposium that included the subjects of:

A. How to Minimize the Iatrogenic Effect from Orthodontics of:

  1. Periodontal deterioartion/damage
  2. White Spot Lesions (WSL) and bracket bond failures
  3. Apical root resorption
B. Methods to achieve excellence in orthodontic treatment (based on American Board of Orthodontics standards)

Pres. Justus was accompanied by his wife Dr. Yolanda Justus, an Endodontist and the transcontinental and transpacific route from Mexico City to Manila took 28 hours for them.  Historically one may recall how the Iberian commerce traversed the Acapulco-Manila galleon route.   His visit coincides with APO’s charter membership in the WFO.   20 years ago on May 14,  1995 in San Francisco, USA  in the same Herbst Theatre building where the United Nations charter was created in 1945.  The APO then  under Dr. Ester Banting was amongst 68 national and regional orthodontic societies that signed the charter that established the WFO.   Under Pres. Justus the number has since reached 110 member organizations with almost 12000 fellows from around the world.  The prestige and honor of APO’s membership in this international organization cannot be understated.

The WFO has reached out to its future membership waiving student membership dues to orthodontic graduate students while enrolled in accredited programs allowing them access on-line to the Journal of the WFO and discounts to international congresses and seminars of member countries.   The love for orthodontics was seen by the strong presence of the residents and faculty from the Centro Escolar University and the University of the Philippines but also from the soon to be accredited graduate programs from the Manila Central University and the University of the East.

Justus who graduated in 1965 both from the National Autonomous University of Mexico School of Dentistry with his dental degree with honors and simultaneously, also from the School of Sciences as a Physicist.  He went on to obtain his Certificate in Orthodontics and MSD from the Univ. of Washington in 1968.

It’s More Fun in the Philippines means it’s Even More Fun with APO/PBO and Drs. Roberto and Yolanda Justus saw a bit of the Philippines from their tours of Spanish Intramuros and the megacity of  Metro Manila,  they sampled the cuisine of local  fine dining and  had a chance to go out of town to the world famous beaches of Boracay and Tagaytay with the world’s smallest active volcano, Taal.
