The Fundamentals of Occlusion

By Dr. Federico Nadela

The fundamentals of Occlusion discusses about the positions of the temporomandibular joints and teeth that will protect these structure from the powerful masticatory muscles. The damage to the tmj would be temporomandibular disorders and to the teeth would be periodontal disease, fracturing of tooth structures and restorations.

The 5 fundamentals are:

  1. Centric Relation
  2. Simultaneous contact of all teeth, heavier on the posterior lighter on the anterior during centric function.
  3. Canine guidance or group function during eccentric movements.
  4. Incisal or anterior guidance
  5. Axial loading of teeth.
