By Dr. Janet Mapa-Pandan
It was through the kind invitation of Paranaque Dental Chapter President Dr. Jocelyn Lubay and its Committee Chair for Continuing Dental Education, Dr. Preciosa Tanagon, that I was given the opportunity to give a lecture to the members of this chapter for its 2nd Scientific Seminar with the theme: “Road to Evidence Based Treatment”. This was held last September 6, 2017 at the Lamoiyan Corporation in Paranaque City.
Dr. Tanagon suggested if I can share the work that I, together with the other volunteer doctors of Noordhoff Craniofacial Foundation Philippines, Inc. (NCFPI) do.
NCFPI is a non-profit organization dedicated to deliver comprehensive cleft and craniofacial treatment and care accessible to Filipinos especially the indigents. The Philippines office was established last February 2006, and the foundation was named after the renowned American Plastic Surgeon Dr. Samuel Noordhoff, who dedicated his professional life to the upliftment of cleft patients.
I have been an Orthodontist volunteer for the past 12 years delivering Orthodontic treatment to the cleft patients. And together with the work that the other volunteer doctors do – surgeons, Orthodontists, general dentists, Pediatrician, speech pathologists – my lecture covered the interdisciplinary care and management of the cleft patients.
The Orthodontist plays a major role in the management of the cleft patients, and together with the treatment rendered by the other Dentist Specialists, and other members of the cleft team, results in patients with improved esthetics and function (chewing and speech).
It was a very well well-attended activity of the PDC , and I am very thankful to the officers of this chapter that I was given the opportunity to share the experience and work I do in the care of the cleft patients.
