1st General Meeting and Scientific Seminar and 24th Biennial Induction Ceremonies

The Association of Philippine Orthodontists held its 1st General Meeting and Scientific Seminar on July 3, 2024 with the theme “Don’t Take My Breath Away: The Role of Dentistry in the Screening and Management of Sleep Related Breathing Disorders (SRBD)”  at One Shangri-La Place, Mandaluyong City. 

Dr. Ye Hong Chen’s presentation focused on the characteristic signs and symptoms of OSA and SRBD in children and adults, its impact on health and general wellness and how Dentists can help in the screening and diagnosis of SRBD and OSA. The presentation also covered the management of OSA thru myofunctional and oral appliance therapy using Mandibular Advancement Device (MAD) which is the most commonly used non-continuous positive airway pressure treatment for mild OSA, or when the gold standard of treatment method, CPAP, is not possible in the treatment of moderate to severe cases of OSA. The last part of the presentation described briefly the Buteyko method of breathing re-education to help improve sleep quality, reduce snoring and relieve OSA.

The very informative seminar is well attended by 122 participants (90 APO members and 32 Non-APO members /Friends of APO) who were awarded 3 CPD points each for their participation.

The seminar also coincided with the 24th Biennial Induction Ceremonies for the new set of APO officers AY 2024-2026.  Five new members of APO were also inducted: Dr. Caesar Joseph Muere, Dr. Pamela Rose D. Raytana , Dr. Sherglaisha S. Alpha, Dr. Arthuro L. Baday and Dr. Angelo C. Martinez.
