The Asian Pacific Orthodontic Society (APOS) Gets Global Exposure with Its Participation in the 7th International Orthodontic Congress The Asian Pacific Orthodontic Society has its very own orthodontic conference (APOC), which is now held every 2 years, since its inception in 2001. However , this time the APOS decided to sacrifice having its own 7th Asian Pacific Orthodontic Conference and instead, incorporate it with the WFO’s 7th International Orthodontic Conference to achieve global exposure. Being a regional Affiliate organization of the WFO, the APOS, under the vibrant leadership of Dr. Somchai Satravaha (also a member of the WFO Executive Committee representing Central & East Asia), wanted to show its mother organization, the WFO, a 100% support for its endeavor. Five years of painstaking preparations for this project by the WFO bore fruit: over 4000 delegates flocked to Sydney for this event. |

It was almost the break of dawn last Jan.24 and I found myself on unfamiliar territory. It was dark and the buses speeding along Quirino Ave. did not seem welcoming. We were told to make our way to the Manila Hotel side of the Quirino Grandstand. The meeting time was 5.30 am. I looked at my watch – 5.45. “Oh no…What will Jose say?”

The 5th APO General meeting 2008-2009 held at Palm Grove, Rockwell Club, Makati last Aug 5 2009 was particularly memorable because aside from the socially relevant topics discussed, this day marked the occasion of the interment of our dear Mother of Democracy Corazon Aquino. With that in mind, Dr. Rossana Sanchez led the invocation with special intention for our beloved ex-President at about 8:40 am. This was followed by the National Anthem. After which, APO president, Dr. Jose Manuel Rivera gave the welcome remarks.
This meeting was hosted by Quezon City 4 with Drs. Maria Elenor Estrada and Maria Victoria Reyes as masters of ceremonies.

The Sun is on its highest peak and it is tremendously hot outside, and yet the participants were really eager to start the race. But before I make some statement regarding the events winner let me brief you first with the mechanics of the race. Each group was asked to bring cellular Phones, Digital Camera, prepare a Team Cheer, Race Attire, and Money for transportation which is provided by the Organizers. Each teams were oriented regarding the 5 task within the different parts of Boracay , for every location there would be marshals to assist them (Ethel, Irene, iris, Dayang, Karen, Joy, Dennis, and Aileen). There are 21 participants in the race which is divide into 3 Teams ( UE Iranian Students, Dr. Naranjilla group, and Dr. Lo kai Who group), at the starting point the teams were ask to decipher a number of word puzzles and receive their first travel clue. You can feel the Adrenaline pumping through their veins rushing through the fist task at hand, and so the race starts at around 2:00 pm and for each task the teams will be required to perform a physical or mental challenge as the marshals take a team picture as proof of completing the tasks.

The first night of the APO’s 5th Regional Congress was capped by a luau party by the beach. The beachfront of the Boracay Regency Hotel was the site of the fellowship night for the delegates and some invited guests. The whole night was made more enjoyable by the wit and humor of the night’s host, Dr. Jaypee Cadaing who was like Johnny Litton/Gary Lising combined.
Our dear APO President Jose Rivera delivered a welcome address, followed by Dr. Somchai Satravaja, the current APOS President. By 7:30 pm, when majority of the delegates have arrived, dinner was served. It was a very sumptuous one. Everyone enjoyed shrimp sinigang, grilled fish/squid, beef caldereta, chicken barbeque, native appetizers like kilawing tanigue, and native desserts like puto and kutsinta. |
